Molly Kay Stoltz, urban garden theatre diva extroardinaire, is joining the Sprout Chicago family! We are excited to have Molly coming on board to contribute her knowledge of green city living.

Molly runs her own sustainable clothing business, works at one of Chicago’s leading garden emporiums and also blogs about natural health remedies on Urban Herbal Girl.

If you have a moment take a peek at her freshly posted bio under the Contributors page. And if you’re itching to do some earth-friendly shopping take a peek at her adorable handmade line of clothing and accessories Rags by Sock Monkey here.

Welcome Molly!

Talk about carbon omission offsets – O’Hare International Airport recently unveiled it’s newest piece of interior decor – an edible vertical garden. While I’m not completely convinced that the airport has all of its intentions aligned with the traditional urban farmer – this effort to showcase alternative green space deserves mention. To learn more about the garden and who was behind it, check out the whole story here.

We are taking our traditional summer hiatus and will be returning in mid-Fall to bring you the scoop on all things lean, green, and Chicago then.
Enjoy your summer!

In commemoration of Earth Day this Friday, Lowes, the home improvement giant, is handing out 1 million trees for customers to snatch and plant all over the country.

My sincerest hope is that this green-thumbed event will encourage carpenters and DIYers to  investigate the source of their lumber and materials and to also consider the impact they may have on the environment.

I would also encourage Lowes to take an additional step in the right direction and look at their suppliers – then we’d have something to really celebrate. But until then it’s important to acknowledge this altruistic attempt to positively impact our environment.

Show your support and swing by a local Lowes store this Saturday, April 23rd to receive a free sapling to plant in your community. The more trees the merrier we’ll all be!

Sprout Chicago loves to be active, fruitful, and at the forefront of bringing you news and views about eco-living in Chicago. I am at once joyous and sad to share that my close friend and co-conspirator Irena has just uprooted to Morocco. Though we hope she will find the time to continue to contribute to the blog, her new adventure will be leaving her breathless with increidble experiences while immersed in a vibrant new culture.

September also becomes an incredibly busy season for me as the holidays creep up and the fall show circuit begins for my eco biz Pierogi Picnic. As I prepare for Chicago’s Renegade Craft Fair, I am documenting my journey on my new blog “Throwing a Pierogi Picnic.” Between this and other escapades I must forewarn readers that I will be sporadically updating Sprout Chicago as time allows. Hopefully by mid-October things will clear enough for both Irena and myself to get back into the green swing of things.

With that in mind – if you’re interested in becoming a contributor to our blog please contact us! We are always eager to have guest reviewers, photographers, and musers. So if you have a green slant to a story, or would like to chronicle your upcoming Midwest road trip – please send us a note!

And as always – stay green!

It’s August and all of the seeding, germination, and planting efforts are paying off! We’ve had our fair share of tasty harvests, bitter greens, and downright mysteries – so I thought it was high time to share an update on my great urban container veggie garden experiment.
